Wharfe Valley Alert

Otley Town Council AdminNotices

The Wharfe Valley Alert system is a system provided by Leeds City Council, designed to send out Emergency Alert messages by SMS text message and email.

It is designed to give advance warning of flooding to businesses and organisations located on the River Wharfe floodplain, within 500metres of the river, in and around Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Arthington, Harewood Bridge, Collingham, Wetherby and Boston Spa, that are within the Leeds City Council Metropolitan Borough Boundary or within 500m of that boundary- where the River Wharfe channel provides that boundary.

It may also be used to warn businesses and other organisations of other major emergencies, with the potential to affect ‘business-as-usual’ within that area.

There is no cost involved for receiving the warning messages, but people registering to receive the messages must be key members of staff within the organisation, capable of forwarding the message to a much wider network of their own contacts- so each message recipient cascades the message out to their own contact list of staff, customers, employees, members, visitors etc via email, phone, text message or by displaying notices giving the warning message.

Up to four people may register from a single organisation/business.

All registrations may be subject to verification by phone/email by members of the Leeds City Council Emergency Planning Unit- telephone: 0113-247-4822 Email: [email protected]

We are keen to register senior managers within manufacturing, service and retail sector organisations, headteachers of schools, Practice managers of health care organisations such as Care Homes, Doctors and Dentists surgeries, local media organisations, Reception staff at Public Libraries, Secretaries and organisers of clubs, societies and voluntary organisations, etc located within the area described above.

In providing this system, we have taken account of both the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 and the Data Protection Act 1998.
