The Council are constantly seeking to pursue projects that benefit Otley and its residents. Current projects include:
Cycling is an extremely popular activity in Otley and the town is a popular destination for road cyclists, mountain bikes and leisure cyclists. Otley Town Council have worked with local Otley cycling groups to produce the Do You Ride Strategy, with the objectives being to develop a plan to improve cycling opportunities for all in and around the town.
In the late 1980’s Otley Town Council purchased the old sewage settlement beds at Gallows Hill, to the east of Otley and created a nature area. A voluntary organisation, Friends of Gallows Hill (see photo at top of page), are working to manage the environmental aspects of the site. The site is a rich environment for amphibians, insects, birds and is known for its very high toad population. Anyone interested in working with the Friends of Gallows Hill please email the Community Development Officer [email protected]
The Localism Act 2011 introduced neighbourhood planning in England. Neighbourhood Planning is a change to the planning system intended to give communities more of a say in the development of their local area. Communities can draw up a Neighbourhood Plan to decide the future of the places where they live and work. Otley embarked on developing it’s Neighbourhood Plan in late 2013.
Researching New Allotments Sites
Otley Town Council continue to work on identifying potential new allotment sites in order to reduce our waiting lists.
The Wharfedale Greenway is intended to be a new attractive and convenient traffic-free green route for everyday and recreational journeys of every kind, be it by foot or bicycle, the greenway would link the communities of Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Burley-in-Wharfedale and Menston along the route of the former railway line.
Otley Town Council are working in partnership with the parish councils in these areas, as well as Leeds and Bradford Councils and Sustrans to deliver this project. Wharefedale Greenway Consultation Executive Summary
Otley Work Club
We provide a free service to Otley residents who are either unemployed, facing redundancy or looking for a change of job. We see a wide range of people seeking work in professional, management, administration, sales and skilled, manual and unskilled occupations. Many go on to find employment quite quickly. We try hard to create a friendly and supportive environment and we see people as often as needed.
We have a small but committed team of volunteers with experience in recruitment, training and other personnel areas. We are based at Otley Core in Orchard Gate and hold interview sessions between 10am and noon on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Appointments can be booked by 01943 466335 or by calling in to reception at the Core.
We can offer help with:
- Writing or improving a CV
- Writing a covering letter to accompany your CV
- Information about online job websites
- Preparing for job interviews
- Basic help with IT or referral to other sources of IT training
