Otley Town

Otley has ancient origins based below the dramatic ridge known as the Chevin. Its greatest period of growth was in the 19th century when it became the world leader in the design, production and refurbishment of printing machines to all parts of the British Empire. Printing itself was a thriving industry in the Town. Whilst printing machines are no longer manufactured here, printing is still an active part of the Town.  The industrialisation of Otley in the 19th century created typical terraced houses for the factories and these houses are highly sought after today.

                                      Market Place

Otley has not forgotten its agricultural roots that made it a centre for cattle markets and created its fine Market Place.  The Town still has an active auction mart and the square hosts regular markets each week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and once a month a Farmer's Market.

Some 15000 residents take pride in being Otliensians and are aptly turning to new industries for the Town.  Tourism is a growing part of the economy and a purposeful vision for the River Wharfe, as it runs through the heart of the Town, has been created to act as a guide for new developments.
