1. Chippendale Statue

Thomas Chippendale was born in Otley in 1718. His baptism is recorded in the Parish register of 5th June 1718. Young Thomas learnt the art of working in oak, ash, elm and lime from both his father and Uncle Joseph. He later left Otley for London where he published 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director' which made him a household name, subsequently giving him commissions to make fine furniture for many of England's grandest houses, such as Harewood, Nostell Priory, Denton, etc.
2. Otley Jubliee Clock

The Victorian Jubilee Clock is an icon of Otley. Originally constructed in 18-- by public subscription. It carries memorials for the Transvaal War at the turn of the 20th Century, a memorial from Belgium refugees from World War I and a dedication installed in August 2005 to all those from Otley who suffered in World War II. This picture is of the pre renovated Jubilee Clock and the next picture shows it following completion of the works.
3. Otley Jubliee Clock

The cast iron casing of the Victorian Jubilee Clock was dimantled and fully restored in 2005. The wonderful green and gold are the colours used by the Victorians when the clock was establihed. Returned to its full glory the clock continues to keep time in Otley and serve as a focal point in the Market Square.
4. United Reformed Church, Bridge Street

The United Reformed Church is one of Otley's landmark churches. It serves a strong congregation adding to the strength of community and service in the Town.
5. Otley Library/ TIC Charles Street View

The new Otley Library was opened in March 2006. This excellent facility provides a great resource for the Town including easy computer access and a Tourist Information Centre.
7. Opening of Otley Library

Leeds City Council opened their new library in Otley in March 2006 using the Town Council bellman as master of ceremonies. The new library is a great asset to Otley and houses the Tourist Information Centre.
8. New Maypole Ceremony 2004

With a full ceremony the new Maypole was carried to the dancing area by the Morris Dancers including Wayzgoose Dancers before a splendid display of traditional dancing.
9. Otley Maypole

Otley has a long trandition of Morris Dancing around the Maypoles. This new Maypole was erected in 2004 on the renovated dancing site along side the older very tall green Maypole which also serves as a flagpole for the town.
10. Buttercross

The foundations of the Buttercross stretch back to medaevil times where the farmers wives sold tranditional butters, cheeses and milk whilst their husbands traded in the cattle markets. Nowadays, the 19th century structure still acts as a place for charities to raise funds - see Buttercross heading under the Council in Community Section.

The Otley Sundial is a very unusual design called 'double polar'. The instructions for this are not easy to convey without being at the Sundail, so visit the Sundial and read the instructions and enjoy the unusual design.
12. Otley Garden Competition

Every year there is a Garden Competition with a range of categories. The Mayor awards cups and shields and other prizes to the hard working winners at an Autumn ceremony in the Civic Centre where the Town Bellman acts as Master of Ceremonies. 13. Otley Cycle Race

Cycling in Otley is an established and long standing pastime which is enthusiatically supported not just by major cycling club but the whole Town when Otley acts as host to a national race each June. The streets are full of spectators for the short and spectacular Town Centre race.
14. Otley in Bloom

Otley in Bloom is supported by the whole community aswell as the Town Council and the Town Partnership. Business is such as this corner pub, the Junction, go to great lengths to beautify the Town with flowers from spring to autumn. Otley has risen to great heights and frequently wins more than one regional competition each year.
15. Allotment Walk

The Allotments of Otley are the pride and joy of the Town Council and some 180 "diggers". In 2004 an Allotment Walk was inaugerated as part of the Otley Walking Festival and one can see here the rich soil and fertility of the Tempest Allotment Site with the Chevin in the distance.

Otley Town Council manages some 10 sites with approximately 180 plots. This and the two subsequent photographs show the richness of the sites. Allotments can be applied for on line or through the Allotment Officer at the Civic Centre.
22. River Wharfe

The Wharfe runs through the heart of Otley and was the original source of power to the Otley mills at the start of the Industrial Revolution. Now the river is a picturesque and delightful feature.

The best way to see Otley in all its glory it to go up the Chevin and look down on this compact and vibrant Town as it lies at the edge of the Dales.
24. Otley Bridge

Otley's bridge over the Wharfe is a classified Ancient Monument. The foundations are medaevil although the current super-structure is 19th Century. Despite heavy modern traffic this single bridge still acts as the only traffic crossing point in Otley.
33. Farmers Market

On the last Sunday each month Otley hosts a Farmers Market in the Market Square. This market has become a major attraction in the area serving a wide range of tranditional and modern products further information can be obtained by going to Useful Links.
